A new identity to refine a brand with history

What is Rödlögaboden?

Rödlöga is a small island in the Stockholm archipelago, four hours from Stockholm city by boat. Since the 1950's it's been the local hub from where you buy groceries, gas, pilsner, connect with people or to get help if you're in aid. Today the offering is very wide, with a fresh vegetable market, charcuteries, smoked fish, ice cream, frozen food and dairy products. Also a range of boat supplies and toys, among other things. This on an island that doesn't have cars, roads, electricity or running water. Rödlögaboden has it's own power source using solar panels and a diesel engine. They also have their own water system that converts seawater into fresh water. To supply both the shop and the café.

Historical identity

I wanted to design a visual identity for Rödlögaboden. They had an old beautiful hand drawn logo that I wanted to keep but make a bit more modern and digitally adjusted. Also I wanted to wrap it up in a new identity that made them outshine their competitors.

Inspiration from signal flags

The design concept is inspired by signal flags used at sea. The flags exist to make two parts accurately communicate with each other. I really liked the parallels in what I wanted to achieve. And to use a theme that matches the place, the store and the customers. Using block colours and flag patterns I made the new visual identity, tied together with a fresh edition of the Swedish colour "faluröd", a brighter and cleaner shade.

Old meets new

I also wanted to match the visual identity with interior design and packaging design. Keeping in mind the heritage of the 1950's version of the shop, with over-the-counter purchase, good quality goods, and a homey feeling. Bringing back that rustic feel but with a modern and practical look. Using regular white tiles or red paint as backdrop, wooden floors, rustic wooden crates, cable reels and vintage shelves to create a dynamic product display. This creates a great basis for the red block color details in the new identity and makes it really pop. A clear message both visually and in communication.
